Workshop Theme: Being explicit about assessment purposes

Time: Dec 2nd, Wednesday, from 14:30 to 17:30

Venue: BC 302

Abstract

This workshop will focus on classroom assessment rather than large-scale tests.  Many teachers are enthusiastic about using good assessment practices in their classrooms but unsure about how to go about doing this.  Surveys have shown that the majority of language teachers are much more confident about using large scale tests than about using classroom and other learner/learning- oriented forms of assessment.

The workshop will first explain the key differences between large-scale tests and teacher assessment and encourage discussion of the implications behind these differences.  It will then describe several types of assessments that teachers may use in their classrooms, demonstrate how these work and what they look like in practice, before inviting participants to try out some activities that are important in teacher assessment I the classroom.

The workshop will close with participant-led discussion about common problems using classroom assessment in Hong Kong and some problem-solving to suggest strategies for moving confidently towards teacher-led assessment in the classroom, focusing on what makes an assessment learning oriented.

Anyone planning to attend is encouraged to bring with them an anecdote about a problem they face in their own teaching; videos of classroom assessment episodes are welcomed.
